Calculate the watt-hour requirements for each device:

Usage (hours) x watts = watt-hours.

Device A + Device B + Device C + Device D = total daily watt-hour requirement.

Go for a Battery Monitor Instead

A more straightforward way to determine your power needs is through a battery monitor.

To accomplish this, you should first ensure that all of your RV's batteries are completely charged before setting out for your preferred boon-docking spot. Accurate results from this test require that you remain remote from shore power throughout the whole camping excursion.

Estimate your daily energy consumption by recording the amp-hours you use on a battery monitor (an entire 24-hour period).Since your daily power needs will fluctuate, we recommend performing the test multiple times andto determine your average daily amp-hour usage. In order to calculate how much energy your batteries can store, multiply your daily amp-hour use through the battery voltage. Lithium batteries typically operate at 13 volts, while lead-acid batteries operate at 12.6 volts.

So, assume you are using a lithium battery, and use around 100 amp-hours over a 24-hour period. Multiplying 13 volts by 100 amp-hours will give you your daily power consumption in watt-hours, which, in this case, would be 1,300 watt-hours.

Step 3 – Understanding Panel Output

Solar panels are commonly rated from 100 to 400 watts in terms of their power output and are, therefore, priced accordingly. Panels with a higher wattage will charge batteries more quickly, but they also tend to be more expensive. Keep in mind, though, that this is the maximum output, so it's only accurate when the panel is in direct sunlight and nothing is blocking its light.

How much direct sunlight do you think your panels will get each day? This could be anywhere from three to four hours per day for some folks to six to eight hours per day for others. Always err on the side of caution and allow some room for error when making such estimates.

Step 4 – Calculating the Number of Panels Required

You may calculate the number of solar panels you will need based on your daily watt-hour usage and the number of hours of sunlight you can anticipate receiving.

Here is how to do that:

Daily watt-hour requirements/number of sunlit hours = number of solar watts required.

Next:

Number of solar watts required/per panel wattage = number of solar panels required.

For instance, let us assume you need around 3,000 watt-hours a day for your van or RV, and expect to get around five hours of sunlight a day. Wiring Solar Panels in an RV

Parallel wiring and series wiring are the two primary options available for connecting multiple solar panels to a charge controller.

Parallel Wiring

Even if one of the solar panels in a parallel connection stops working, the others will continue to supply electricity. When panels are joined in parallel, the amps in the system will increase, but the voltage will not change.

If you connect two panels, both rated at 10 amps and 12 volts, in parallel, your solar array will have a power of 20 amps and 12 volts. This is because the parallel connection doubles the amount of current that can flow through the solar panels. Since the current is significantly higher, you will want wire that is both thicker and more expensive.

Disadvantages of Parallel Wiring

Series Wiring

If even one of the solar panels on a campervan's array isn't functioning properly, the whole system will be rendered inoperable. When solar panels are wired in series, the voltage produced by the system increases; the power output, however, remains unaffected.

The whole array will have a voltage of 24 volts and a current of 10 amps if it is comprised of two solar panels, each of which has a rating of 10 amps and 12 volts. Regardless of the number of panels you connect in series, the system's current (in amps) will never be more than the lowest-rated panel's rating, no matter how many panels you use.

Let's say you have two solar panels, each rated at100 watts and 5 amps. If you add a panel with a rating of 12.5 amps that has 150 watts of power, it will only deliver 5 amps, which will bring the maximum output of that particular panel down to approximately 60 watts.

Series connection makes each panel dependent on the others. Covering even one panel can have a considerably negative effect on the system's output.
